Marie-Gabrielle Koumenda is an Edinburgh based French-Cameroonian musician, composer, theatre maker and singer-songwriter performing under the stage name Djana Gabrielle. She has been honing her craft on the Scottish music since 2015, performing at various concerts and festivals, including Celtic Connections for which she earned a Danny Kyle Stage Award in 2019. Before setting out on her musical journey, she studied International Humanitarian Law, specialised in Children’s rights and subsequently worked for various Children’s rights charities in the UK and abroad. She moved to Scotland to focus on music, and over the past few years she has been combining her love for music and theatre and has worked with various theatre companies including Lyra, Magnetic North, Imaginate, and Stellar Quines. She is now in the midst of developing her own theatre show for young audience with a focus on Afro hair, and plans on releasing new music in the near future.
