News Story

After a call out for a photographer to join the Caring Scotland team, we are delighted to announce that Chris Scott has been appointed the resident photographer on this special oral history listening project.
Chris is a Scottish photographer with a care-experienced background, whose style is contemporary with a dramatic and atmospheric feel. He will take individual portraiture photographs of ten of the personal story contributors during the project. The resulting photographs will be part of a touring photography exhibition that will tour in 2026.
Chris Scott shared with the team what this opportunity meant for him and the wider care experienced community
“I hope this amazing opportunity to work on the Caring Scotland exhibition, using my own personal experiences in the care system, will shift the narrative around care experience from one of deficit to one of strength. Too often, our stories are told through statistics, news articles and case studies that strip away our humanity. This project has the potential to show the world that we are not broken people who need fixing—we are survivors, creators, leaders, and storytellers in our own right. I want the public and young people currently in care to see these images and recognize their own potential reflected back at them.
I want society to understand that care experience doesn't diminish us; it gives us perspectives and insights that can benefit everyone. Most importantly, I hope this work helps build a community where care experienced people feel seen, valued, and empowered to share their truths without shame.”
This opportunity feels like coming full circle—taking the pain, confusion, and isolation I once felt and transforming it into something that can offer hope and connection to others. Through my lens, I can capture not just the struggles we've faced, but the strength that emerges from surviving them.
Every photograph becomes a bridge between my past and someone else's present, showing that our stories matter and that we're not defined by what happened to us, but by how we choose to use those experiences to light the way for others walking similar paths”
Caring Scotland is an ongoing listening project that will document the lives and experiences of care-experienced people in Scotland. A team of artists, led by playwright Nicola McCartney, continue to gather stories across Scotland, ahead of an immersive touring installation and this photographic exhibition in 2026/27.
The project is a unique partnership between National Theatre of Scotland, Who Cares? Scotland and the National Library of Scotland and is funded with an award from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
