Overview
Inspired by the realities of today's theatre sector.
A new game developed through Project EX/CHANGE for freelance theatre professionals.
Location: Rockvilla, 125 Craighall Road, Glasgow G4 9TL
Date: Sat 26 Sept 10.30am–1.30pm
Ever wondered what goes into running a theatre organisation?
Role Play an Organisation is a new game developed through Project EX/CHANGE, an independent research project exploring the relationship between freelancers and theatre organisations.
Step into the role of a theatre organisation and work with a team through a series of scenarios exploring the opportunities, tensions and competing priorities organisations face every day.
Using play as a low-stakes way to explore complex questions and demystify what goes on behind the scenes, the game creates space to experience a different perspective, test ideas and spark conversation. Afterwards, we'll come together to reflect on the experience, challenge assumptions and discuss what these scenarios reveal about the relationship between freelancers and organisations, and explore what we could do differently.
During the session you will:
- Learn more about Project EX/CHANGE and its research to date
- Play Role Play an Organisation (approximately 60 minutes)
- Reflect on the game and explore what it reveals about the relationship between freelancers and organisations
- Share ideas that will help shape the future development of the game and Project EX/CHANGE
- Connect with fellow freelance theatre professionals over tea, coffee and sweet treats
Who is it for?
Open to freelance theatre professionals across all disciplines - from artists and technicians to producers, administrators and makers.

Project EX/CHANGE is an independent research initiative by Andrea Ling exploring how the theatre sector can create more sustainable and equitable ways of working by rethinking the relationship between freelancers and organisations.
Developed during Andrea's 18-month Director Fellowship at National Theatre of Scotland, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the project combines research, creative practice and participation to explore new ways of organisations and freelancer’s working together. Building on workshops, conversations with freelancers and sector-wide research, Project EX/CHANGE develops practical tools, games and frameworks that encourage dialogue, challenge assumptions and imagine new possibilities for the future of theatre.
