East & South East Asian Research Project

Identifying, Supporting and Amplifying East and Southeast Asian voices within Scotland’s cultural landscape.

About the Project

The ESEA Research Project explores how Scottish theatre can better identify, support, and amplify East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) voices, stories, artists and audiences within Scotland's arts and cultural sector.

This project is led by Dramaturgy Fellow Hannah Low, in partnership with ESEA Creatives, as part of her Change Making Fellowship supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

Hannah's research will involve reaching out to artists, communities, and organisations across Scotland to better understand experiences in the sector and identify ways to strengthen support, visibility, and access to opportunities for ESEA artists and audiences.

Get Involved

In the current phase of Hannah's research project, she is looking to hear both from Artists and Community members who are of East or Southeast Asian Heritage though two questionaries.

See details below, and find links to the Artist and Community Questionnaires.

Coming Soon

Paid Focus Group

The next phase of the project includes a paid focus group opportunity that will bring together ESEA artists based in Scotland to reflect on the projects findings and help shape recommendations for the sector. Travel and access support will be provided.

The call out, and further information on the focus group sessions will be announced on our artist opportunities page and through our artists mailing list.

You can sign up to the mailing list by clicking on the button below.

ESEA Artist Database

Alongside this research project, ESEA Creatives is building a database of ESEA artists based in Scotland, helping artists connect with organisations, collaborators, and find future opportunities. The database consists of artist profiles including contact details, biographies, and further information about their practice.

This database will be shared with the National Theatre of Scotland, the Federation of Scottish Theatre, and other industry partners alongside the final research report, increasing the visibility of these artists within the wider sector.

If you are interested in being included in the ESEA Creatives database, please email:
