Nicolette is a queer, mixed raced freelance dancer and aspiring choreographer. They are early into their dance career however their fascination for dance came from her musically inclined family, being surrounded by references to hip hop, breakdancing, dancehall and ceilidh, as well as growing up with music videos and documentary style screenfilms about varying genres and artists. Her parents were always supportive of her developing this hobby, the fondest memories they have are training with Urbaniks Street Skool of Dance as a child, the owners Paul and Pauline encourage dancing with happiness over dancing to be perfect and that lesson continues to motivate Nicolette in all of their endeavors. Nicolette’s  most recent works have been collaborating with other Scottish dancers in groups like SK Dance, Three60 and Whacking Scotland.

“Being able to express yourself through dance is a gift we all can forget sometimes. I feel it’s the most vulnerable way to communicate but also the most beautiful form of connection”.
Although there have been moments where Nicolette has felt like giving up, or that she wasn't good enough, through joy, sorrow, frustration and resilience, she came to realise it is impossible to fail if you keep on trying; it’s only possible to learn. Nicolette’s advice to others would be “Don’t hold back, be kind to everyone and don’t lose sight of why you started something”. Some advice from others that has helped Nicolette is “Do the passion project”, “Always double, never half” and “This too shall pass”.

Choosing to train specifically in dance helped Nicolette in some ways and hindered in others, what they came to understand later is that “There is no one route to become the person you envisage. It ‘s not necessary to sacrifice your quality of life for your quantity of work and it’s okay to change your mind or re-evaluate the options that arise. Nothing in life is certain, we have to find a positive means to an end and I choose movement to be mine.”
As they continue to evolve, they are currently exploring krump, whacking and roller disco, whilst continuing to develop house, freestyle and hip hop. Finding new avenues of dance allows Nicolette to keep growing in her journey and expands perspective to opportunities outside of their comfort zone.
“I have always been headstrong and outspoken, so when participating in Smoke, it was not out of the ordinary for me to incorporate my morals into my performance. I’m completely honoured that Rianne and the crew from NTS offered me this life-changing role, it has validated all the dreams 5 year old Nic had growing up and was such a gratifying experience. It feels like divine timing that this opportunity has aligned with my current situation and I cannot wait to see what the future has in store.
