Glasgow Mela
About Glasgow Mela
Founded in 1990, the Glasgow Mela is the largest Mela in the country, and one of Glasgow’s longest-running festivals. The Glasgow Mela (from the Sanskrit word mēlā, from mil to meet), is a free-to-attend multicultural arts festival based on the traditions of the Indian sub-continent. It brings together tens of thousands of people from across Glasgow and beyond to celebrate South Asian arts and culture in Kelvingrove Park every summer, bringing music, dance, and other artforms to the heart of Glasgow’s West End.
The festival also features a vibrant programme of food and activities to attract a broad demographic. The Glasgow Mela is delivered by parent body Glasgow Life, with core event delivery support coming from the Glasgow Life Events Team.
The Mela programme is curated and delivered by ScrAN (Scottish-Asian Creative Artists’ Network). ScrAN is led by, and was created for, Scottish-Asians working within the creative industries in Scotland. Hardeep Singh Deerhe, an Indo-Scottish music scene veteran, and Dr. Diljeet Kaur Bhachu, a musician-academic, formed ScrAN in 2017. Glasgow Life recruited ScrAN to serve as Mela Producers in 2019, to ensure that the Glasgow Mela’s creative programming was led by people of South Asian heritage.
