Overview

Metamorphosis: In My Mother's Garden is a short film written and directed by the interdisciplinary artist - Gillian Katungi.

Metamorphosis creates a soft inner world of abstract places and textures, audiences are immersed in a sensorial exploration of stories of love & humanity and connections to ancestors and the earth.

The film weaves together snippets of dreams, rituals and intergenerational conversation, the short film offers an explorative journey of roots in place, identity and a journey home to one's multiple selves over and over again. It invites viewers to remember their connection to the land, ourselves and others, using connection as a vehicle for personal and collective transformation.

The film will also accompany Gillian's debut album: ‘Metamorphosis: Feeling My Way (to Freedom)' - a record exploring healing, decoloniality and collective liberation.

Metamorphosis: In My Mother's Garden will premiere at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival 2026  in York from 4 - 8 November 2026.
