Festive Firsts

A magical opportunity to give something back this Christmas

Building self-esteem, developing skills and transforming aspirations for thousands of young people over the last six years, our Festive Firsts programme has created opportunities and removed financial barriers to enable a wide range of life-changing theatre experiences.

In 2017 alone, 300 young people were given tickets, workshops and opportunities to meet the creative team and cast members of four different National Theatre of Scotland productions. Groups from across Scotland, including Clydebank, Perth, Dundee, Edinburgh, Stirling, Glasgow and East Kilbride, engaged with performances and discussions around hit shows such as The 306: Day, a moving musical theatre piece about the struggle for equality and recognition experienced by women on the Home Front during WWI; Room, the live stage adaptation of the best-selling novel and Oscar-winning film, a very moving exploration of a young woman and her son being held captive; Adam, the multi-award winning, highest audience-rated show of this year’s Edinburgh International Festival Fringe, an inspirational real-life story of a young transgender man’s journey of self from Egypt to Glasgow; and Rocket Post, a raucous, heart-warming true-life story about the power of invention and the importance of resilience in achieving success.

Feedback from 2017 First Nights participants:

“I want to do more like this. I loved it. I just want to get out of the house and enjoy more.”

“It was an amazing experience. Thank you for giving me the opportunity – it was an honour to watch Adam.”

“It was fantastic. It’s opened my eyes to other things.”

“I didn’t expect it to hit me so hard. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.”
