Stewart is a Bridge of Weir born writer and performer. His debut novel, Blessed Assurance (Vagabond Voices) was published in 2019. He has had a number of short stories, poems and monologues have published in various print and online journals and anthologies in Scotland, Ireland and Canada. As a playwright his work includes Robert Burns’s Celtic Complex (The Arches/ For Your Pleasure), Noah Parts 1 & 2 (Theatre Urubaru, Finland) The Dark Room (The Arches/For Your Pleasure) Therapist, (The Arches) Last Train, (The Arches) Tick One Box (Ankur Productions), One Straight Line (A Play, A Pie and a Pint) The Taking of Zena Charbonne (The Occasion) and The Monster and Mary Shelley (The Occasion). As writer/performer he recently created the short verse piece, Granny & Grandpa, for Visible Fictions online Phone Fictions project. Stewart was a co-founder of Benchtours Theatre and devised or performed most of their productions between 1990 and 2006. As a performer, he has worked with many of Scotland’s leading theatre companies, as well as on television and film. For several years he was creative writing lecturer at HMP Shotts and in 2019 edited Visiting Time, an anthology of prison writing. At the moment he is co-editor of Causeway/Cabhsair, a magazine of Irish and Scottish writing published by Aberdeen University Press. In 2019 Stewart was awarded an Aberdeen-Curtin Alliance scholarship by the University of Aberdeen and Curtin University in Western Australia, to study a PhD in Creative writing, through which he is currently working on his second novel, ilk.
