About Penny Stone
A few months ago, Penny Stone organised a songwriting workshop with Chilean activists and songwriters in Scotland, Chile, Canada, USA and England. The group listened to an indigenous activist, Ambar, speaking about her community's resistance to a Canadian mine in Putaendo, at the foot of the Andes. Songwriting tasks were explored in small groups, and after a few follow up zooms the group had collectively written a 'finished' song.
To share the song and the story of Putaendo’s resistance to the mine, singers around the world were invited to record themselves singing the song, and to send photos illustrating some of the lyrics. Penny co-ordinated and edited these sections of the film, whilst activists in Putaendo and Santiago (members of Cultura Planetaria) recorded some interviews with activists. A second song, written and sung by Barbara, an 11 year old living in Putaendo, was added to the film alongside images shared by members of the community.
