About Jaïrus Obayomi
A very recent graduate from RCS, Jaïrus is a director and dramaturg with a strong interest in new writing development. She is an avowed multi-disciplinarian and is experienced in performance, script editing and development and translation.
Her interest in and definition of "translating" is fairly broad - on that basis, she was brought onto a new writing project for the newly-formed Colonial-Era Caribbean Theatre and Opera Network (CECTON) as dramaturg. Working with a writer and a director to create a theatre piece based on research by the network's academics, Placeholder premiered at Edinburgh’s Scottish Storytelling Centre in November 2021 as part of the Being Human Festival. It goes to the Byre Theatre in St Andrew’s in February 2022.
Jaïrus studied for a postgraduate degree in Playwriting & Dramaturgy from the University of Glasgow, where her final dissertation - a translated recasting of Euripides’ The Bacchae - drew on ideas of West African diaspora, translation theory, postcolonialism and visibility.
Alongside traditional theatre projects, Jaïrus is hugely interested in puppetry and audio drama.
In June 2020, she directed Hide/Bound, an experimental piece based on the selkie myth and looking at the politics of metamorphosis through the seemingly disparate lenses of womanhood and queer identity, toxic masculinity and online radicalization, and eco-sustainability.
