About Bex Anson
Bex Anson is a visual theatre director and scenographer based in Glasgow working across dance, circus, outdoor arts and community events.
Focused on collective synergy, the crossing of artforms and audience experience Bex's work is rooted in site-specific, immersive productions and passionate collaborations with artists and performers from all walks of life. Her aesthetics and themes are inspired by science fictions, expressionism and lowbrow/pop surrealism.
Bex's company MHz scenography has created 5 acclaimed shows since 2016 (KIDX, STRUT, CROWD CTRL, VOID, LIQUID SKY) winning a Total Theatre Award (2018), Made In Scotland Awards (2018, 2019) Stomping Ground Commission (2022), Manipulate Creative Fund (2020) and multiple Creative Scotland awards in association with producers Feral.
Residencies: Jacksons Lane (2017), Nofit State Circus and Old Vic (2018), Jerwood Bursary/Circus Cirkor (Sweden, 2019), Manipulate Creative fund (2021).
Bex was part of Imaginate's Children's Festival Scottish delegation in Japan (2021, online) and Sweden (2022), and regularly runs expressive arts classes for Govanhill Youth Club.
Whilst graduating in Painting at GSA (2006), Bex founded site-specific art Gallery LOWSALT (2006-2011) and curated over 30 exhibitions that culminated in a GI commissioned sculpture park in a wasteland.
From 2010 to 2015, Bex was a founding member of the illustrious 85A: an anarchic collective of artists and designers who staged 25 elaborate happenings and immersive performances including a cinematic ghost train, a people crusher and an edible hair salon to name a few.
Bex became the performance director of Bristol's Bassline Circus and oversaw the production of large cast spectaculars in Europe-wide music festivals between 2010 and 2015. (Glastonbury, Bristol Pride, Boomtown, Fusion)
Since retraining as a physical theatre practitioner in 2014 with Philippe Gaullier and in Rites of Passage with Sue Fox from Welfare State International, Bex has focussed on developing her own company MHz, alongside long term collaborator/ AV designer Dav Bernard. MHz aims to mesh digital technologies alongside deep collaborations with movement artists.
Scenography commissions include Symoné (2021-22), Craig Manson (2021), Salty Dolls (2022), Francesca Hyde and Ellie Dubois (2017), and Saffy Setohy (2016).
