ORPHANS - A NEW SCOTTISH MUSICAL | OPEN CALL FOR TWO PERFORMERS

We are starting to look for ensemble roles for our major musical production Orphans next year and are starting with a search for two young female-identifying performers to form part of the streetwise girl gang. We are running this open call as we are keen to hear from a wide range of performers – whether you have formal training or not.

The selected performers will form part of the cast of Orphans, and will be required full time for rehearsals and performances from 14 February – 30 April 2022. These are paid roles.

Orphans is a new Scottish musical based on the multi-award-winning cult film by Peter Mullan, with music and lyrics by Roddy Hart and Tommy Reilly, book by Douglas Maxwell and directed by Cora Bissett.

The two roles we are casting for:

Paper Girl 1

To look 13 - 15. A performer of colour.

She was raised in Scotland. She is a ballsy but kind young girl from a warm, slightly eccentric family. She is one of the trio of ‘The Paper girls’ who sell newspapers around the streets of Glasgow at night. She sticks up for the underdog and isn’t swayed by any bullies. She is a freethinking young girl who knows her own mind, and sticks up for people she feels are being treated unfairly.

Paper Girl 2

To look 13 - 15. A performer of colour.

She was raised in Scotland. She is the slightly dippy one in the group, but very dry and very funny. Always trying to stand her ground in the gang, a bit surly, but underneath just really wants to be part of the gang. A real comedic character, full of passion for her cause, takes no nonsense from anyone. She is streetwise and full of attitude.

Character names will be determined based on the cultural heritage of the actors cast.

We are looking for performers who are very strong singers and great movers. We welcome trained performers, but also young aspiring performers who may not have had formal training but who have innate talent.

How to Apply

Read everything (including FAQs and Instructions) clearly before you apply.

All applicants must be 18 years or older by 15 November 2021.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from anyone who does not currently have the legal right to work in the UK.

We are seeking video submissions for this first stage of the process. We’d like to receive a video of you performing ONE of the scenes provided, and another video of you singing a 1 minute extract of a rock/pop song of your choice - something that shows off your vocal abilities.

As both performers also need to be great movers, we are also asking you to send us a short video (around 20-30 seconds) of you dancing – this can be a video you already have, perhaps from a previous performance. If you don’t have anything suitable you can simply record yourself dancing your own choreography to a song of your choice, again we only need 20-30 seconds just to get a sense of your abilities.

If you require any help with the above, you can find helpful tips here.

All video submissions must be received by Friday 16 July at the latest.

Complete the form on our website HERE

And upload your videos using the WeTransfer link HERE

We will watch all submissions in full, and a shortlist of candidates will be invited to a group workshop audition at our rehearsal studios in Glasgow in the first week of August 2021. We will notify all applicants of the outcome by 16 August.

GENERAL CASTING INFORMATION

The National Theatre of Scotland believes in including artists from diverse backgrounds and cultures based on sex, gender, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including ethnic origin, colour, nationality, and national origin), disability, sexual orientation, religion and or belief, age, and whether they are drama school trained or not, in all its work.

Where we are casting for a role that is culturally specific, we are committed to first casting a performer from that culture. However, we consider artists from diverse backgrounds for every role, not just those written with specific personal characteristics in mind.

If a specific skill, language or accent (spoken/ BSL) is required for the specific role, we will indicate this in the breakdown.
