Scenes for Survival | The One with the Lockdown

News Story

Ash and Charlie are two regular, same-sex flatmates. Stuck indoors during lockdown, they eat together, laugh together, and watch shows together. But one night over dinner, stuck in a routine that they’re both a little too comfortable with, something happens that might just turn their friendship on its head. Martin Donaghy and Oliver Bennett feature in a witty new short from playwright Meghan Tyler, directed by Leonie Rae Gasson.

Produced by National Theatre of Scotland, in association with BBC Scotland, Screen Scotland, BBC Arts’ Culture in Quarantine project with support from Hopscotch Films.

"Here I am. Sat at my laptop furiously drafting a quote on the importance of theatre and absolutely stumped for the right opener. That scientific fact about the shared heartbeat of an audience seemed “nice” for a bit, albeit it reads like a reckless cliché; the poem “and people stayed home” by Kathleen O’Meade was a good contender, but heck did it make me sad about the world; just openly swearing at the screen was an option for a while… not a good option or a fruitful option but an option nonetheless. This pickle in itself is why we need theatre, I think. We as theatre-makers are fierce, passionate, relentless storms determined to move our audiences. We as theatre-watchers are open masters of scrutiny ready to be moved, to delve into our emotions, to make sense of the human condition... of the world. Scenes For Survival may not be in an auditorium with lights and sound and physical other beings around us but it still fires up the inhabitants of Theatreland; some of us watch, some of us make, all of us feel things about the world… just with slightly cheaper glasses of wine. And, given the uncertainty of the world that we're in, that's a brilliant thing. It's a bloody brilliant thing."

Meghan Tyler, Writer

"I am really excited to be working on a piece written by Meghan Tyler for Scenes for Survival. It feels great to start a new collaboration - Meghan and I haven’t met before so it will be a purely digital relationship! We are living in a new world and can feel in our bodies that things are different. We are forced to explore new ways of making. Scenes for Survival gives artists a brilliant opportunity to play, earn and try to ensure that the Scotland that emerges from the Coronavirus crisis is somehow better than the one that entered it."
