1. Tell us about you and how you make work?

Tell us about what you do here (i.e., a playwright, director, choreographer etc), and tell us about what type of work you make -this can include things like making musical theatre, site-responsive autobiographical performance, work responding to a particular theme etc. If you have a biography, you can include that. If you are new to theatre/ performance and have background in a different industry that is relevant to your practice/ project idea, you are also welcome to include that.

2.Tell us about the idea or project you want to develop?

We know that this residency will allow you to explore and dive deeper into your idea, this question is asked so you can tell us what you hope to explore or make during your residency.

3.Tell us if you were awarded this money how you would spend it to achieve what you want?

We will work with you on managing your budget and what you can do with the financial resource. Here we are interested in seeing what you will spend the money on i.e., your fee, materials, collaborators etc. We have set fee rates which we expect you to pay yourself and any collaborators. Our development rate is £150 per day for up to four consecutive days, £697.52 per week for up to six consecutive days.

Eligibility

1. What do you mean by “who has had more than three works which have been commissioned and fully funded – by a venue or company from its initial development stage to professional produced production presented at on a main stage scale”?

We use main stage scale to refer to a production which has been presented in a venue with an audience of 250+ with a run of at least one week in a professionally funded production. This also refers to productions which have been commissioned by a venue or company from development stage all through to professionally production.

If you have more than 1 idea you want to apply for, then you must submit a new application for each residency. For Discover (Highlands), Discover (Writer) and Develop (for Disabled Artists) - as the lead artist/ collective/ group you can only apply once to each of these opportunities and they must all be different ideas. Application Process

1. Application answers word count and length.

Please use the word count and time length for video and audio applications as a guide. You don’t need to use the maximum length of time or word count; these are just approximations. These questions and answer word limits are based on written English language, and so we recognise that for some applications answers given in a different format a few more words or time may be needed to say all that you want to.

2. Supporting documents - can I include work that hasn't been performed as an example of my work?

Yes - it is helpful for the panel to see examples of your work and your practice (such as writing style). If you are applying to Discover (Writer) you can also include plays that haven’t yet been performed as examples of your work. Due to anticipating many applications, we may only be able to read/ watch up to 20 minutes of your supporting materials. You can include which sections you’d like us to read/ watch specifically if the work is longer.

3. I’m having issues with submittable.

Please contact artistresidency@nationaltheatrescotland.com if you are having any issues.

4. How will you assess applications?

We will assess applications on how an applicant has answered the questions and use a scale to see how well evidenced answers are. We will use a consensus decision making process where we will discuss and make the decisions together -rather than 1 person having final say on outcome. The panel are looking for two main things:

  • how you and your idea/project speaks to our programme priorities and if this is in an innovative or interesting way
  • how this residency will enable you to realise new ambitions for the project and your career going forward.

In recognising the many barriers in the industry, to reduce further marginalisation and exclusion, and to build an artistic programme that reflects the diversity of Scotland, we are prioritising applications from artists who are:

  • Black, Brown, People of Colour, from the African Diaspora, Caribbean Diaspora, East Asian Diaspora, South-East Asian diaspora, South Asian diaspora, West Asian and Middle East Diaspora, Latinx, Indigenous people, bi-racial / multiple heritage
  • from marginalised genders including women, trans men, non-binary, gender non-conforming, two-spirited, agender, genderfluid and intersex people
  • disabled, deaf, blind/ partially sighted, neurodivergent, and/or with any chronic illness and mental ill-health conditions
  • from a low-income household
  • LGBTQI+

We also recognise barriers to inclusion and welcome applications from people based outside of the central belt, or who are speakers/users of Scotland’s minoritized languages and those from marginalised cultures and ethnicities.
