These are the questions you will need to answer when you apply for a Discover residency.

Some of the questions are on the form are not in Simple English. So we have made this page to help explain the questions.

What is your name (artist/collective group)?

What this means: Tell us what your name is. Or, if you are applying for a group, tell us the name of the group.

Tell us about you and how you make work?

What this means: Tell us about what you do. For example, are you a writer, director, or choreographer? Also, tell us what kind of work you make. This could be things like making musicals, performances based on places, or work about themes. If you have a biography, you can include that. If you are new to theatre and have worked in a different field that's related to what you want to do in theatre, you can tell us about that too.

You can write up to 100 words. Or you can send us 1.5 minutes of video or audio.

Tell us about the idea or project you want to develop?

What this means: Tell us what you hope to explore or make during your residency. We want to know what your idea is, and what you plan to do with it during the residency.

You should write between 300 and 500 words. Or you can send us 5-8 minutes of video or audio.

Tell us how your proposal speaks to one or more of our priorities?

What this means: Look at our list of programme priorities.
Tell us about how your idea fits into one or more of our priorities, or important goals.

For example, if you want to make a show for 18-25 year olds, that would fit into our goal to make work for young people. Or if you want to make a work in BSL, that would fit into our goal to celebrate all languages spoken in Scotland.

You should write between 200 and 400 words. Or you can send us 4-6 minutes of video or audio.

If you were awarded this money, tell us roughly how you would spend it to achieve what you want?

(Please note, during the residency we will work with you to set and manage your budget)

What this means: We will work with you on managing your budget and what you can do with the money. But we want to know roughly what you will spend the money on. For example, your fee, materials, paying people you work with, and so on.

We have set fee rates which we expect you to pay yourself and anyone you work with. Our development rates are:

- £150 per day for up to four days in a row, or

- £697.52 per week for up to six days in a row.

Where are you based in Scotland?

What this means: Tell us where in Scotland you live.

You can tell us in a few words. Or you can send us up to 1 minute of video or audio.

Please let us know, if you are comfortable, whether you are:

• Black, Brown, People of Colour, from the African Diaspora, Caribbean Diaspora, East Asian Diaspora, South East Asian diaspora, South Asian diaspora, West Asian and Middle East Diaspora, Latinx, Indigenous people, bi-racial / multiple heritage
• marginalised genders including women, trans men, non-binary, gender non-conforming, two-spirited, agender, genderfluid and intersex people
• disabled, deaf, neurodivergent, and or have any ill health conditions including chronic illness and mental ill-health
• from a low-income household
• LGBTQI+

If submitting video or audio, you can say “Yes I identify as being from one or more of the groups listed” or “No I do not identify as being from one or more of the groups listed” or “I prefer not to say”

What this means: You should tick this box if you identify as being from one or more of these groups:

• Black, Brown, or a Person of Colour
• Woman
• Trans or non-binary
• Lesbian, gay or bisexual
• Disabled
• From a low income household.

You don’t have to tell us if you don’t want to.

If you are sending us a video or audio, you can say one of these:

• Yes I identify as being from one or more of these groups.
• No I do not identify as being from one or more of these groups.
• I prefer not to say.

We are prioritising applications from artists who have experienced exclusion and marginalisation.

What this means: We really want to hear from artists who belong to one of these groups. We are more likely to choose artists who belong to one of these groups.

Supporting Material – please attach up to 4 supporting materials, and your CV. Supporting materials can include: links to press, videos (no more than 5mins in total), photographs, extracts of your writing

What this means:

Supporting materials mean things you share to help explain your ideas or show your work, like:

• links to stories about your shows from newspapers or magazines.
• videos of your shows. These should be no more than 5 minutes long.
• Photographs of your shows
• examples of your writing

What this means: Tell us your phone number, your email address, and how you would like us to contact you.

We will email all applicants with their outcome. Successful applicants will be contacted and invited to a meeting to discuss their project and any support needs further.

What this means: We will email you to tell you whether we have chosen your idea or not. If we choose your idea, we will invite you to a meeting to talk to us about it. We will also talk about any support needs at the meeting.

At application stage let us know if there is anything additional you would like us to know in terms of how to communicate with you and any needs we can support with? You can upload any access documentation (such as an access rider, access statement or Employment Support Plan), however you will have the opportunity to share this with us at a later date once selected in you would prefer.

What this means:When you apply, you can tell us if you have any access needs. Or if you need us to contact you in a certain way. You can attach your access document if you have one. Or you can wait until later if you prefer.
