This year, we have 2 Discover Residencies. These are for discovering, researching, and starting a new idea or project.
The residencies take place over 3 months. You will be paid for 2 weeks of your time. You can decide how to use your 2 weeks of paid time. For example, you could work for 2 weeks straight, or on single days spread out over the 3 months. You can also use some of the money to work with actors or a director/dramaturg. Or you could use it for research time.
(A dramaturg is someone who helps you to write plays. They give ideas and advice to make the story better.)
Discover Residencies will take place between January and March 2024.

| Discover Residency (Writer)
By the end of this residency, we want you to have finished the first draft of a play. Apply to this residency if you have an idea you would like to develop into a play.
| Discover Residency (Highlands)
By the end of this residency, we want you to be able to share what you have been working on with other artists. You do not need to have finished the first draft of a play.
Apply to this residency if you want to explore your ideas. For example, you might want to spend the time researching your idea and making it better. You could do this by yourself or with others.
What fee will I get?
For each residency, you will get £5000.
This money covers:
- the lead artist’s fee, for 2 weeks of your time.
- project costs
- materials

What other support will I get?
As well as the £5000 fee, we can also give you other kinds of help. These are some things we might be able to give you. It will depend on what you need and what is available.
- A place to rehearse. This will be at Rockvilla in Glasgow, or Eden Court if you are in the Highlands.
- Technical support and advice.
- Practical advice meetings with National Theatre of Scotland staff. For example, how to market your show, how to raise money, or how to take your show on tour.
- A meeting at the end of the residency to talk about how the project went, and to talk about your next steps. For example, advice on producing the work.
- Money for your access needs. We can also help you to write an access rider. This is a document that lets people know your access needs.
- Other kinds of help depending on what you need.
| Applying for the Discover Residencies
We will choose one artist or group for each residency. We will choose based on your application. There will not be an interview.
Who will read the applications?
A panel of people will read the applications. The panel will have National Theatre of Scotland staff, and other people who can advise us. We will tell you who they are on our website. The people who help us will be paid for their time.
