Residencies

This year, we have 2 Develop Residencies. The Develop Residency program aims to become closer to artists. They give artists more time and money, £20,000, to think about and work on their ideas. Artists can use all the things and help available. The program is flexible, so artists can make it fit what they want to do.

|Develop Residency (Disabled artists)

This residency is for disabled artists. You can apply by yourself, or as part of an artist group.

The aim of the residency is to help you to develop an idea. We will give you money and a space to work, to help you work on a play from the early idea to a first draft.

At the end of the residency you will be asked to share your work. But we can help you to decide what form this takes.

Apply to this residency if you have an idea for a play and want time and help to develop it. For example, you might want to get your project ready to show to people who might help make it. Or you might want to try out ideas before you start rehearsals.

We will work with you to tailor your residency to what you need, want to explore and develop.

What fee will I get?

You will get £20,000 for this residency.

This money covers:

  • the lead artist’s fee, for 6 weeks of your time
  • the fees for other people working on your project
  • project costs
  • materials

When is the Develop Residency (Disabled Artists)?

The residency will take place over 5 months, between January and May 2024.

You will be paid for 6 weeks of your time. You can decide how to use your 6 weeks of paid time. For example, you could work for 6 weeks straight, or on single days spread out over the 3 months).

|Develop Residency (Artists in Community)

This residency is for an artist, a group of artists, or a company. The aim of the residency is to help you to develop an idea or project. Your project must be with and about a community in North Glasgow. Your project can be any kind of performance. For example, a play, dance, comedy, or music.

This will be part of a bigger project called The Neighbourhood Project. The project is about what it feels like to have a national theatre company in your neighbourhood. And also what being in the neighbourhood means for us at the National Theatre of Scotland.

You don't have to know exactly what your project will look like by the end. You can explore that during the residency.

We will work with you to tailor your residency to what you need, want to explore and develop.

What other support will I get?

As well as the £20,000 fee, we can also give you other kinds of help. These are some things we might be able to give you. It will depend on what you need and what is available.

  • A place to rehearse. This will be at Rockvilla in Glasgow.
  • Technical support and advice.
  • Practical advice meetings with National Theatre of Scotland staff. For example, how to market your show, how to raise money, or how to take your show on tour.
  • A meeting at the end of the residency to talk about how the project went, and to talk about your next steps. For example, advice on producing the work.
  • Money for your access needs. We can also help you to write an access rider. This is a document that lets people know your access needs.
  • Other kinds of help depending on what you need.
