Artistic Development

National Theatre of Scotland Artistic Development

The Artistic Development team exists to support the development of Scotland’s most exciting artists and artworks, to create a diverse and engaging programme of work for Scottish audiences, and develop and retain Scottish talent.

We do this by generating, soliciting and responding to the most exciting ideas by professional/ professionalizing artists and companies whose work we are familiar with and excited by. Once we’re excited by an artist or company’s body of work, we will cultivate a relationship with them through a range of activities, to offer bespoke development opportunities and generate the most thrilling ideas for production.

Together with our team of Associate Artists, currently: Graham McLaren – Associate Director, Kieran Hurley – Pearson Playwright in Residence, Fiona J MacKenzie and Maeve MacKinnon – Associate Artists: Gaelic, and colleagues in the Learn Department.

We seek out new talent by attending a wide range of performances, reading scripts, running workshops and meeting people.

If you are an artist or company that would like to collaborate with the National Theatre of Scotland, we want to hear from you, so that we may build a relationship with your work, with a view to potential future partnerships.

You can get in touch with us in the following ways:

If you have written a stage play:
You can send us an electronic version of your script for consideration by our team of highly skilled script readers, who make recommendations to the department about the most talented writers and exciting plays submitted. For more information about the script reading programme, click here.

If you are a theatre maker:
