REVIEWS OF HALF LIFE
07/09/07
The aim [of Half Life] is to open up this astonishing landscape at Kilmartin to a nation still largely unaware of its presence, and of the huge historic and archaeological importance of a cluster of burial and ritual sites dating back almost 5000 years.
At the same time, Farquhar and his company are anxious to to raise questions about how we relate to the past and to the dead, using the intense neolithic burial-culture of this area to remind us of humankind's epic struggle, over countless millennia, to make sense of our own lives and deaths . . .
Half Life as a whole is an infinitely enriching experience. . .
The impact . . . is unforgettable; and the whole event is exactly the kind of project in which Scotland's National Theatre should be investing, not in a quest for perfection, but in the search for new horizons, and for a shifting and deepening of Scotland's vision of itself.

Installations are spread out over [Kilmartin] Glen's historical stones, and match quiet tranquil calm with accompanying sounds that bring a new, eerie atmosphere to procedings . . .
With a stunning set that dramatically lights the forest - and even brings out the local bats - and a trio of fine performances from the main cast, it provides the beating heart of an ambitious, fully realised project.

Half Life, the play, is performed late at night in a natural outdoor arena. Physical-theatre-based director Mark Murphy and novelist Thomas Legendre tell a tale that fuses ancient and modern, as an archaeologist and his wife attempt to find some common ground following the loss of their daughter to the elements. Part domestic tragedy, part elemental excavation, it's a visually thrilling hour in the dark, set on an astonishing sundial-shaped construction and soundtracked by a pure, at times frenetic score. Bodies walk upside-down in the underworld while the main cast of three scratch around in their emotional dirt in a series of thundering set pieces.
